Kazoom - Unknown Character

About Us

The author: Brian

I’ve been a keen motorcyclist all my adult life. I began at age seventeen with a Triumph Speed Twin and have since owned three Hondas, one Yamaha and four BMWs. My current bike is a BMW R1150RS.

Years ago I first realised that many young kids are fascinated by motorbikes. I was surprised, as I thought bikes and bikers would seem a bit scary to kids. But, in truth, they can’t seem to get enough of bikes.

Kazoom is my response to that fascination. And it is the first book from Weyba Books, which I set up especially to publish it. I named Weyba Books after Lake Weyba, situated close to my home at Peregian Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

My background is as a teacher, initially in schools and later at university. I’ve written history books for students … but never before a book for young kids!

Some of the characters in Kazoom are based on my family, including my two young grandchildren Bronte and Ollie. The initial idea for Kazoom came from my partner Kathleen, who rides a Triumph Bonneville. We’re thinking about our next Kazoom book already … maybe a colouring book.

The illustrator: Rob

From as young as I remember, I have loved drawing. Dashing my parents’ dreams of having an academic son, I ditched chemistry in grade 11, and duxed art. I studied animation at Southbank Institute of TAFE and since then have made a career in various Brisbane based design fields – from broadcast to games, print, to multimedia. After 15 years, I found myself drawing less and less. I have always wanted to illustrate books and when I saw the opportunity with “Kazoom, I pulled out my best pencil case.

Kazoom sums up how I feel. I want to do more with this life. Don a crash helmet and launch into it, full throttle!

The designer: Sam
Besides my 3 wheeler tricycle at 6… The closest I got to motorbike riding is touring Bali on a 350 Yamaha with a car driver’s licence, after being taught to ride 5 min earlier. I suppose that comes from being 25 and thinking you are bulletproof!

Brian and I have been involved with a number of magazine publishing projects and I was pleased to be asked to be involved in this fun project.

My background is running my own Graphic Design studio and my other passion, Fine Art. It has been an enjoyable weekly experience drinking coffee at Blackstar (West End Brisbane) while discussing and fleshing out the zany characters for the Kazoom book with Brian and Rob.
